Ken Forrester Stellenbosch Petit Chenin 2007

by Nannette Eaton on May 11, 2009

“Most dreams of glory are safe because we never venture to put them into practice.” — Charles Curothe

Ken Forrester 2007 Stellenbosch Petit Chenin is currently the best selling white at the Wine Loft. I was a little skeptical, as chenin blanc has a lingering bad rep from the 1970’s (think Technicolor polyester suits and Qiana shirt horrors) as a cheap jug wine in the United States. But I obeyed the Wine Harlot mantra, “Trust your local wine merchant!” Bill Boyer and the gang at The Wine Loft haven’t steered me wrong yet. Life is an adventure, step out of your comfort zone and try something new.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This is a golden wine with a glorious sweet floral aroma. It’s an intoxicating scent that I spent five minutes sniffing and couldn’t come up more than “yummy sweetness.” The winery tasting notes have the bouquet as “honeysuckle.” Hey, in my defense, honeysuckle is a flower!  The flavors are tart and tangy apple with honeydew melon and a good acid profile. For you sauvignon blanc fans this will allow you inch out of your comfort-zone in style. Wine Spectator lists this wine as a perennial best value buy. This would be a terrific wine for Alaskan King Crab with drawn butter.

The alcohol content is 14%.Screw-top closure. This is pure Chenin Blanc from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. I paid $11 USD for this at the Wine Loft. It is imported by Boutique Wine Collection.

The musical pairing is not the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.  (See prior Qiana shirt reference).  No, instead the musical selection is the sublime “Sky” by the Grey’s Anatomy favorites Joshua Radin & Ingrid Michaelson from the EP Unclear Sky. Available at iTunes.
