No More Coffee Mugs! Give Gifts That People Actually Want (Like Wine) 2009

by Nannette Eaton on November 20, 2009

St. Supery Sauvignon BlancI believe in only giving gifts that I covet. With wine, that gives me so many choices!  You need to know your recipient: casual drinker or hard-core wino?  Then decide on price-point.  I can go both ways, sometimes a single bottle of a favorite wine is perfect, other times a case of $8 wine makes a great impact. That said here are my initial thoughts for thoughtful holiday wine gifts.

Los Vascos The Grande Réserve
Domaines Baron de Rothschild Lafite is a world recognized brand, but few of us can afford the French vintages. Luckily for us, Lafite has expanded to Chile. Chilean wines are a great value, and I suggest Los Vascos. You get the Lafite “wow” factor, and this cabernet blend is awesome. Suggested retail $21, I saw it on line for $16.

St. Supéry
I’ve always been a fan of St. Supéry, their juice never disappoints, and I love their labels. Elegant, clean and classy. Since I’ve been writing about wine, I’ve had interactions with the winery. Super-nice people. The wine ranges in actual retail from $18-50 depending on the wine.

LangeTwins Generations 2007 Petit Verdot | Petite Sirah

Lange Twins
Super-nice family vineyard and winery in Lodi. They advocate smart farming and sustainable business practices. And the wine is to die for. I’ve had the Petit Verdot/Petite Syrah $16-20 and the Viognier $13-16 and they were remarkable.

This is a South African wine, I like the pinotage blends. The yellow cheetah labels are dynamic and fun. And with the price point of $7-11 it allows you to give multiples.

Tarantas Crianza
This is an organic Spanish tempranillo-cabernet sauvignon blend. It’s got a bold gorgeous label and is perfect for gift giving. You can pick it up at Whole Foods for $8-11.
