7 Deadly Zins

by Nannette Eaton on January 1, 2010

“Women and wine, game and deceit; make the wealth small and the wants great.” – Ben Franklin

The Wine Harlots first great wine-love was zinfandel. Which in turn inspired lust, greed, and eventually sloth. The Wine Harlots List of Sins is incalculable.  We figure, if you’re going to sin, you might all well do them all, an “economy of sin” as it were.  Cheaper by the dozen.  It begs the question, Will I go to heaven when I die?  Will I be forgiven for living my life?

Which made those existential questions all the more thrilling upon the receipt of the David Michael 7 Deadly Zins.  All of the deadly sins in one bottle? Dude, bring it on!  We were up to the task.  Wine Harlots were looking forward to some liquid depravity.  Nope.  Not so much. Not even a little bit.  Nada.  But although I dearly want to say the wine inspired wrath (when we work a theme, we work it to death) it was simply a disappointment. There was nothing technically wrong with the wine, it just didn’t suit our palate. It committed the Wine Harlot Great Sin of being “raisiney” — not a fault, just a style choice. Love the sinner, hate the zin.

The details: 14.5% alcohol. Cork closure. Appellation Lodi.  The suggested retail is $17 USD and can be purchased directly through Michael David Winery website, or from a fine wine purveyor near you. This was a media sample kindly provided by Wine PRess.

And for gluttony (i.e. the food pairing) we say mix it up and substitute zinfandel for for the burgundy in Rick Bakas’ luscious Bouef a la Bourguignonne. C’mon, live a little, we’re pretty sure you won’t go to hell for this.  (Other stuff you did, but not this.  Relax, word on the street is you’ll be in good company.  Lots of company.)

You have to love a song that references wine, Wine Harlots do, thus the music match is the sublime “Loves a Sinner” by David Poe with Duncan Sheik from the album Live & Solo At the Artists Den available for purchase at Bandcamp or Amazon, or give it a listen at David’s MySpace page. If you’re in San Diego, inspire some Wine Harlot envy and see Duncan Sheik & David Poe in concert on January 11, 2010 at the Old Globe and stay for the World Premiere of Duncan Sheik’s Whisper House at the Old Globe beginning on January 13, 2010 with David Poe as lead ghost.  Spooky, but not sinful!
