Old River Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

by Nannette Eaton on February 20, 2010

“You could not step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to you.”  —  Heraclitus

“He who postpones the hour of living rightly is like the rustic who waits for the river to run out before he crosses.”  —  Horace

The color is clear ruby.  The nose reads high alcohol with a fruity vermouth component.  One the palate it’s juicy and smooth, with black cherry and cassis.  A well-integrated wine with a medium length finish.

The details: 13.6% alcohol.  Cork closure.  The certified organic grapes are 75% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 5% merlot from the high elevation Ponderosa Vineyard, in the Sierra Foothills in Nevada County, California.  The bottle carries an ingredient label: organic grapes and sulfites.  The suggested retail is $19 USD and is available directly from the Old River Vintners website.  This was a media sample generously provided by Magnanimus Wines.

The music match is “River Man” by the sublime Nick Drake from the album Five Leaves Left.  On the subject of rivers (as with life) the Wine Harlots say go with the flow.
