My favorite funky breakfast and lunch spot is Pipes Cafe in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. It unpretentious place, a cash-only, meals served on paper plates kind of space. Where the motto is: “No shirt. No shoes. No problem.” The name of the cafe is derived from Pipes, a surf-break in Cardiff.
You stand in line to place your order, and on the weekends, the line is lengthy. I suggest sending one of your party to the Pipes Cafe espresso bar to cage a few lattés while you wait to place your food order. Caffeine is the Wine Harlots’ friend.
Early in the day I go for the “Little Breakfast” which is more than enough for two – I try to get Pipes Rookies to split one with me – usually without success (with the implication I’m being cheap.) When the overfilled plates arrive, the Rookies are all wide-eyed and exclaim, “Wow. We should have shared this!” Really, you don’t say.
If you want to keep your cholesterol count in check, here’s a little neighborhood secret tip. Oatmeal available as an on off-menu selection, the seasoned surfer dudes swear by it.
For lunch I usually gravitate to the burger (it’s served with potato chips, but make sure you order a side of the fries – they’re steak cut and oh-so good) or the divine Cobb Salad. The Cobb is priced at $7.50, the most expensive thing on the menu. The only bummer for the Wine Harlots is they don’t have a liquor license – a pint of Stone would go so well with the burgers or the salads. You do have the option to have your lunch packed to go, so you can enjoy your Caesar with a sauvignon blanc or the burger with a Beaujolais. When you stop by Pipes say hello to Dana and tell her Nan from the Wine Harlots sent you.
