Fledgling Wine

by Nannette Eaton on April 28, 2010

“To read is to empower
To empower is to write
To write is to influence
To influence is to change
To change is to live.”
Jane Evershed

Wine Harlots are over the moon about Fledging Wines.  It’s the perfect storm of everything near and dear to the harlot heart.  Wine, of course, is the natural hook.  If you don’t know about CrushPad, check them out.  They are a custom winemaking facility that allow nascent oenophiles the opportunity to have their own branded wine.  We’ve been saving our pennies so we can make a barrel of Scarlet Harlot.  (A girl can dream, can’t she?)

Wine Harlots are big readers, from the earliest memories of being read to by our parents, and the struggle to learn to read (my dad nearly blew a blood vessel at my willful refusal to sound out the sentence, “Sally sows seeds in straight, even rows”) to the eventual voracious love of reading.

Room to Read is the creation of John Wood, who on a backpacking trip to Nepal saw the need for books for the children and answered the call.  From the humble beginnings of a few books for Nepalese children, Room to Read has built over 1100 schools and over 9100 libraries to promote literacy.  If you haven’t read John’s book, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World please do so today.  Reading this book will change your life.  (And maybe you’ll be inspired to change someone else’s).

And then there’s Twitter.  As the unofficial Twitter Queens of Wine, we love the juxtaposition of the serious with the frivolous in the conversation.  We think Twitter is like a social media haiku, or perhaps an on-line cocktail party.  A revolutionary way to communicate.  Twitter decided as a Corporate Social Innovation Initiative to partner with Room to Read.  The Twitter staff created the Fledgling Initiative and partnered with Crushpad to create “awesome wine for the benefit of Room to Read, a non-profit organization extending literacy and educational opportunities to children worldwide.”   Wine and literacy.    An easy sell, at least from the Wine Harlot perspective.

The wines are not ready to bottled, but you can purchase them now, and they will delivered when they are ready to be shipped.  If you can’t wait to sample the finished product, join us for the world’s first live video virtual barrel tasting on Friday, May 7, 2010, at Twitter’s San Francisco Headquarters.  By purchasing a tasting pack of 4 innovative 50ml test tube size “tiny bottles” of barrel samples of Fledgling wine, you’ll be ready to join the party!  Each tasting pack will include two barrel samples of both chardonnay and pinot noir that demonstrate the differences between stainless steel, neutral and new French oak barrels.  Barrel tastings are a rare treat to begin with, and now you can have one right at home.  Each pack is $14 USD, and for each tasting pack you buy, $5 will be donated to Room to Read.   If you buy 4 or more packs, shipping is free and that innovative tasting party you’ve been meaning to host just got a little easier, and a lot more meaningful.

Make sure you order your tasting pack by Friday, March 30th to insure that you’ll have your samples in time to taste along.  The Wine Harlots tasting pack is on it’s way, we’re so excited we’re twitterpated!
