Walker Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2008

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.”  — Tennessee Williams

Mama said not to talk to strangers.  Love ya mama, but sometimes advice needs modification.  It was early morning, jet-lagged and sleep deprived, clutching my latté like the last chance for salvation, I was blearily attempting to write a wine post at a ubiquitous Southern California Starbucks, where I was being incessantly pestered by an Annoying Random Guy demanding to know what I was doing on my laptop.  Ok, I’ll admit, I’m not Mary Sunshine in morning, but Annoying Random Guy would have been a tool at any time of the day.  I advised I was a wine blogger, and then Annoying Random Guy launched into a steady stream of questions about everything under the sun, to the point I was praying for death – either mine or his, your pick.

After the Annoying Random Guy conversational deluge ended, the gentlemen to my left said he was a winemaker, Steven Walker from Walker Family Vineyards.  We chatted for a bit, Mr. Walker said if I was going to be at Starbucks tomorrow, he’d bring samples of his wines.  After the odd conversation with Annoying Random Guy and the curious coincidence of running into a winemaker at a coffeehouse, the Wine Harlot truly thought she was being Punk’d.  None the less, game for any adventure, I appeared the next day, and voilà wine samples were proffered.  Now that the serendipitous provenance of the procurement of the wine has been disclosed, let’s get down to business.

The Walker Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2008 is a lovely wine.  The color is golden hue of a leisurely summer’s day.  The wine has flavors or apple and stone fruits, beautifully balanced with the judicious use French oak.  The label’s image is Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party.  The wine is ideal for idle Sunday brunches; the perfect pairing would be a simple Roasted Chicken.

The details: 14.5%.  Cork closure.  Appellation: Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County.  The suggested retail is $27.50 USD with a 15% case discount available directly from Walker Family Vineyards.  It’s also available at select local San Diego retailers such as The Third Corner and restaurants such as Donovan’s.  This was a media sample generously provided by the winery.

The music match is “The Stranger” by Billy Joel from the album The Stranger.  I have always depended on the kindness of strangers, and it’s working out pretty well for the Wine Harlots.  Cheers!
