Ten Mile The Broken Road 2006

Ten Mile The Broken Road Proprietary Red is named in honor of the pioneers who made their way to California in the belief of Manifest Destiny and to find fortune as their destiny.  The press kit is lyrical “And so they came, saints and sinners, dreamers and schemers, to claim their place in the ever-expanding American landscape — often on foot, at an average of ten miles a day. But then, Gold Fever began to cool, and the open road to vast riches was showing deepening ruts. A transformation of values was beginning, colored as it was by new ideas and uncharted possibilities. A number of newcomers turned away from digging gold to pursue a more enduring wealth borne from the earth: The liquid gold that was California wine.”

The wine is a rustic field blend, which would benefit from aeration.  The first day it drank a bit rough, the second day it smoothed-out.  It’s a zesty blend of flavors blackberry, black cherry, pepper and vanilla.  The perfect pairing is Sausage & Pepper Rigatoni.  It may not be road food, but it’s simple, easy and delicious.

The details: 14.1% alcohol.  The grapes are sourced from California with a blend of 46% petite sirah, 44% zinfandel, 7% barbera, 3% carignane aged in 20% new oak and 80% older French & American oak.  The wine is available from Nine North Wines.  This was purchased for $9 at the Cardiff Seaside Market.
