What to Give This Holiday Season? Best Gift Ever 2011

“Joy is not in things; it is in us.” – Richard Wagner

Wine Harlots suggest you give of yourself this holiday season. (Knock it off you perverts; I’m being serious for a moment.) Tithe your time. Even if you have an abundance of cash (and if you do in this bleak economy, feel free to dontate generously to the Wine Harlots Relief Fund) helping others really lifts your spirits, gets you out of your own head, and makes you realize that your troubles don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Volunteer this year. Here’s a few Harlot suggestions to get you started.

  • Donate blood. If you have the ability to donate blood, please do. There is a never ending need, and lives depend on it.
  • Feed your neighbors. Donate your time and resources to your local food bank. In this economy, food insecurity (a fancy way of saying “hunger”) is rampant and there is a staggering need for food. And not just in December. Place reminders on your calendar to donate in April, and July…. Hunger is a year-round issue.
  • Donate to local alcohol addiction treatment centers. You can help your neighbors struggling with addiction. You can also donate to drug addiction treatment coalitions that provide Narcan (naloxone) to overdosed civilians. I personally recommend the Adderall (prescription stimulant drug) abuse education section for adult ADHD pateints.
  • Help an adult to read. Reading is one of the great joys and life, and not having functional reading skills hampers career and life acheivement. Become a literacy volunteer.
  • Build a home. You don’t have to be a master carpenter to assist in creating a house or rehabbing an old one.
  • Old clothes, new life. As the year winds to a close, clean out your closet and donate the clothes you aren’t actively wearing to a community resource center in your area. They’ll distribute your spare garments to people who can use them now. And stop thinking you’ll lose that last 10 pounds and you’ll squeeze back into those business suits. Dress for Success will make sure they wind up being put to good use suiting up job seekers.
  • Clean a beach. Or a park. Or a playground. Littering is a blight on the community, and it makes us see red. Keep America beautiful.
  • Donate to Church through a Tithe. For those of us who are religious, Christmas is a time where we remember Jesus and keep the Church close to our hearts. Giving a tithe at this time helps keep our religious ceremonies in Church alive and meets the needs of those in the community. Giving can be as easy as picking up your mobile phone and using Church Text To Give to do your part.

Ok, we’ve climbed off our soap-box, but our suggestions and hopes are heartfelt. Wine Harlots wish you a happy, joyful holiday season.
