Château L’Escart

by Nannette Eaton on February 13, 2012

“Drink wine. This is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” ― Omar Khayyám

On the last day of our sojourn in Bordeaux, we dropped in on Damien and Lorena Laurent of Château L’Escart, seventh generation winemakers at Saint-Loubès in Entre-Deux-Mers. It was a quick stop, but the time we spent with the Laurent’s made me envy their life. They’re a small winery, so they do every aspect of the production themselves, from the fieldwork to the sales calls (easy life, not so much), but as we sat in the early morning light of a golden Bordeaux autumn, with the sunlight glinting off the wineglasses on the patio, it was the perfect life. I was happy in the moment. The moment of my life.

The wines of Château L’Escart are extraordinary. The vineyards are organic, and aspects of the natural and bio-dynamic movement are being incorporated. All of the wines are wonderful. Especially compelling was Château L’Escart Omar Khayám, named after the Persian poet, with a different verse on each vintage – Khayyám was so prolific, they’ll have enough poetry for several generations. The wine is nuanced and elegant, and very well may compel you to write sonnets. Suggested retail: $35 USD. Maybe poetry isn’t your thing, but romance is? Then for you it’s the top of the line wine, Château L’Escart Agape. At $50 USD, it may only be for special occasions, but really, what price love?

The Omar Khayám and the Agape are beautiful wines, as their price implies. But what was truly amazing was the deliciousness and complexity in the Château L’Escart Eden $15 USD and the Château le Bergey $10 USD. Serving either of these wines will impress your wine snob friends and will equally delight the casual drinker, and will make your wallet sing with joy. For comprehensive tasting notes read the Château L’Escart article at Bigger Than Your Head.

And listen to Omar. Drink wine. This is life eternal.
