Oregon Advent: Day 10
Lange
 Estate Winery & Vineyards
Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay 2013

by Nannette Eaton on December 11, 2014

“Music is the wine which inspires one to new generative processes, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for mankind and makes them spiritually drunken.”  — Ludwig van Beethoven

Of course the Wine Harlots are going to talk about the wine affectionately named “lingerie chardonnay” by winemaker Jesse Lange, which we assume means it’s not “naked” (i.e. fermented only in stainless steel) but by a combo of steel and neutral oak treatment, but then again, maybe it means something although different. (A girl can hope.)

Lange Estate was founded by Don and Wendy Lange in the Dundee Hill nearly thirty years ago. To get a better flavor of Lange, read Brian Doyle’s book, Grail, The: A year ambling & shambling through an Oregon vineyard in pursuit of the best pinot noir wine in the whole wild world.

Lange Estate Winery & Vineyards Three Hills Cuvée Chardonnay is lovely, bright and acidic and rich and creamy at the same time. The sensation is hard to discribe, the tasting notes say, “The high-toned nose displays citrus blossom, baked apples, creamy nutmeg with hints of fresh apples, honey and lemon zest. The round, rich palate bursts with green pear, white peach and honey with notes of almond and anise. The finish is long and lush with crisp acidity” which is kinda right, but not really. We suggest to try a bottle yourself to see what we mean.

The music match is “December Day” from winemaker/music maker Don Lange from the album A Change in the Air.

The details: 13.2% alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Appellation: Willamette Valley. Varietal: chardonnay. Retail: $40 USD. The wine was provided as an editorial sample for the Oregon Advent project.
