Argyle Brut was the first Oregon wine we ever had, a pre-party quaff before we ventured out somewhere disreputable on New Year’s Eve, long, long, ago on a rainy night in Seattle on the last day of the year. The label is different now, but I’m sure the bottle would say the same of us, it’s more minimal and sophisticated, and how we wish that was also our destiny.

For us, the Argyle Vintage Brut was a fun and festive glass, the flavors were green apple and citrus, but do you ever become perplexed about all those tasting notes you read, and you don’t taste what they say you should? That was us this time — this is the winery notes on this vintage, “the delicate bouquet is filled with red berry spice, lemon blossom, and toasted brioche. The palate begins with generous plum and gingernut biscuit, yet leads into edgy minerality and briney undertones. The bright 2011 acidity lends itself to the long, energetic finish, begging for Belon oysters.” So the take-away here, if you don’t taste what other people do, don’t sweat it — Wine Harlots don’t and it works just fine for us.

Sometimes we get so serious about food pairings, today, we’re doing to play. The perfect pairing is Pop Corn drizzled with Oregon Truffle Oil and dusted with Jacobsen Salt. It’s so easy and elegant. The music match  is the jangly pop “She Doesn’t Get It” by The Format from the album Dog Problems.

The details: 12.5% alcohol. Cork closure. Appellation: Willamette Valley. Grapes: 60% pinot noir, 40% chardonnay. Retail: $27 USD. The wine was provided as an editorial sample for the Oregon Advent project.
