“For nonconformity, the world whips you with its pleasure.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Specializing in wines that aren’t pinot noir in the Willamette Valley takes a rebel heart. Enter Remy Drabkin. Remy grew up in the valley, and began working harvests at thirteen. The circuitous life-journey led Remy to a passion for Italian red varietals. The Real Wine Julia writes more about Breaking Bad with Remy Drabkin of Remy Wines (ok, it’s breaking bread, but the Wine Harlots chronic aphasia makes breaking bad much more thematic with the rebel, iconoclast, nonconformist vibe. Just work with me here.) More Remy coverage can be found at the Oregon Wine Press.

The Remy Wines Lagrein 2011 is a knockout. For any talk of rebellion, this a classic Old World wine. Beautifully integrated, to the point the flavors meld into one inarticulable glass of deliciousness. Remy Wines attempts to explain the wine fall short: “A sophisticated and enchanting treat to any wine aficionado.  Shaved fennel, dark fruits, spice and complex tannins and hints of berry.” Nice try. But no. If you have the discipline to just drink a glass a night, you’ll be rewarded — we’re on day four, and it’s still magnificent.

For food pairing with the Lagrein, Remy suggests Ricotta Tart with Leeks and Caramelized Shallots or Herbed Polenta with Mushrooms. Wine Harlots suggest lots and lots of charcuterie or a hearty Beef Stew. The music match is “Girl from the North Country” which is a Bob Dylan classic. We’ve picked the raucous cover by Lions to please our rebel hearts.

The wine was provided as an editorial sample for the Oregon Advent project. When you look at the Remy Wines website, a lot of the wines have sold out. Wine Harlots don’t recommend joining wine clubs often (there is so much wine out there in the world to explore, and being tied financially to a few producers isn’t always the smartest option for people on budgets) but in these cases, such as boutique Remy Wines, where the production is small, committing to buy their wines upfront, makes sure that you’ll have the opportunity to drink the wines, but also guarantees income for the winery.

Wine Harlots love, love, love the labels on the Remy Wines and secondary line Three Wives Wines Limited edition posters were made of both labels for holiday gifting — if you want them, we bet if we pre-order Remy will make more, it never hurts to ask!
