Oregon Advent: Day 18
Union Wine Co.
Underwood Pinot in a Can

“Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.” — W. C. Fields

Union Wine Co. was based on the premise that rejected the construct that Oregon wine need to be expensive. Or pretentious. The Union Wine Co. is #PinkiesDown, and has created a series of irreverent videos gently mocking the poncey affectations what we in the wine world occasionally fall into.

Besides our love of the awesome alternative packaging, we are smitten with the Union Wine Co.’s 1972 Citroën H Van converted into a traveling winemobile. (It’s the Wine Harlots secret fantasy, touring the country, passing out delicious wine to the thirsty masses. A chicken in every pot, wine in every glass, kinda thing. But we digress.)

The Pinot Gris in a Can was awesome, exactly what you’d want in a travel-friendly beverage — fresh, bright, light, with grapefruit, lemons and pear notes. Perfect for a day at the beach, a bonfire, campfire, or hiking refreshment. But, the Pinot Noir in a Can was a pass for us, it was disjointed, had way too much oak, and frankly, didn’t taste like pinot noir. After about three hours, the pinot noir was better, but for this packaging, no one is going to wait around for the wine to open up. Wine Harlots suggest dialing back the oak, and creating a proprietary name for the red wine, so that it won’t be compared to the legendary Oregon pinot noirs. (Note: The wine was sampled in the Riedel “O” Pinot Noir/Nebbilo glasses for proper evaluation, not the fun Bormioli Rocco Bodega Wine Tumblers pictured in the photos.)

The perfect pairing for the Underwood Pinot in a Can is logistically dependent, since it’s a portable potable, (have can, will travel) and it will pair with a wide variety of festive foods. Wine Harlots paired it with Dungeness Crab Cakes for the win(e.) The music match is the melancholy holiday anthem “Doxology” by David Poe from the album Love is Red.
