Welcome to Philanthropy Thursday, where we profile people, products, and organizations that showcase the best nature of humankind.

“When a woman turns to scholarship there is usually something wrong with her sexual opportunities.” — Friedrich Nietzsche

Geez, even Nietzsche is taking shots at the Wine Harlot. My sexual opportunities are just fine, Freddy, mind your business and keep your opinions to yourself.

Even if Nietzsche has doubts about scholarship, Layer Cake wines fully support scholarship and wine writing. Layer Cake has endowed the North American Wine Bloggers Conference with an annual $5000 scholarship to provide undercapitalized new media wine writers an opportunity to attend the Wine Bloggers Conference. The Wine Bloggers Conference is a three-day symposium that offers participants the opportunity to explore and experience where new media and the wine world intersect. Past participants have been wine bloggers, wine writers, new media innovators and prominent leaders of the wine world.

When he announced the scholarship, Jayson Woodbridge, owner and winemaker of Layer Cake explained, “Telling the story of the vine is the life blood of the wine business. We have such history. It needs to be passed to the next generation. Wine lovers enjoy learning about their favorite labels. These are incredible stories. Wine bloggers and new media visionaries understand this. It’s our pleasure to establish the Layer Cake Wine Scholarship and make these scholarship funds available for those aspiring to do justice to the stories of the wine world.”

If you want to make a contribution to Wine Bloggers Conference, they are happy to take donations of any domination. Who knows, your contribution might send the Wine Harlot to the 2011 conference in Charlottesville, Virginia in July.
