“Drink to me.” — Pablo Picasso
As famous last words go, I’ll drink to Picasso. I’ll also drink to the Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva, a delicious easy-drinking red, at a reasonable price. The color is a bright ruby, the flavors are strawberry and cherry with notes of pepper and vanilla. The perfect pairing is Bobby Flay’s Lamb with Rioja Vinaigrette and Endive Salad with Serrano Ham, Pears & Blue Cheese Dressing. The music match is a little Spanish guitar “Suite Española, Op.47 – No. 3 Sevilla” by Milos Karadaglic from the album Mediterraneo.
The details: 13.5% alcohol. Cork closure. Appellation: Rioja. Varietal: tempranillo 85%, graciano 10%, mazuelo 5%. Suggested retail $14 USD, with actual retail ranging from about $11 to $18. The wine was a sample from Campo Viejo, kindly facilitated by the Thomas Collective.
