“Technology should be an important ingredient. It may be and should be a tool for social development.” – Aleksander Kwaśniewski

“A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living” — Rudolf Steiner

What are the Wine Harlots crushing on? This week it’s Crushd – The Wine App.

Crushd is social media for wine. Crushd just launched, and is a free iPhone application that allows you to compile and share your wine adventures (future versions will incorporate Android users). Why am I using the app? As my loyal viewers know, I’m a low-tech girl in a high-tech world and totally not an early adopter, I snottily declare, I want tech that works! Shedding my aversion to the new and the untested because of my sworn duty to bring you, my loyal winos, the latest and greatest in wine, I gave the Crushd app a test drive and I’m loving it! Crushd is reminiscent of early Twitter (and I don’t mean in a snarky, back-handed Fail Whale way, either). With a simple interface and ease of use, it’s perfect for anyone who might be tech-impaired or under the influence of the grape. (Yes, it was road tested after a few bottles, and it was still easy to use. Wine Harlot Warning: We do not advocate social media under the influence – drunk tweeting and/or crushing is not recommended.)

To use Crushd you enter the wine you are drinking, the location, a couple of words and a photo — then publish. Voilà, you just Crushd! You’ll start off taking staid bottle shots, but you’ll soon expand to taking whimsical pics of your drinking buddies and art-shots. Same with the tasting notes. Don’t feel constrained to dull old descriptions of the wine. Last week I referred to an overblown red as a one-night-stand (refer back to my previous admonition not to drink and type, please learn from the Wine Harlots trials and errors.)

Another cool part of Crushd is the commerce piece of the app. Instead of being jealous of what your friends are drinking, you can click on the shopping cart and see where the wine is available for purchase. In addition, use the location button that shows the wine purveyors in your area with the wines your friends have Crushd – you can be in a retail location and have the ability to select your wine with confidence with guidance from your friends.

Like a lot of things in life, you can do it by yourself, but it’s much more fun with friends. And so it is with Crushd – The Wine App. Like with Twitter, the user experience is heightened if you are following a healthy amount of people. Follow us; our name on Crushd is Wine Harlots (with a space between the words).

Wine Harlots tip of the week? Get Crushd.

Full disclosure per FTC Act 16, CFR 255 - Although there is no financial compensation involved in this commentary, the Wine Harlot, swag hag extraordinaire, did manage to finagle an awesome Crushd hoodie from the Crushd Crew. Did it influence my writing? Wine Harlots are easy, just not that easy.
