“Revelation can be more perilous than Revolution.” — Vladimir Nabokov

“A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery.” — Mao Tse-Tung

“We have two American flags always: one for the rich and one for the poor. When the rich fly it means that things are under control; when the poor fly it means danger, revolution, anarchy.” — Henry Miller

Ten days ago wine drinkers the world over came together to salute a beleaguered grape varietal — syrah. To bring awareness of its deliciousness. To sing its praises to rafters and rooftops. On that day we won the battle, but the war to capture the hearts and minds of the wine drinking public rages on.

The moniker used to mobilize the troops was Occupy Syrah. It recently came to my attention that some new media wine bloggers boycotted the Occupy Syrah event, as they appear to have misunderstood the movement. They were timid and didn’t want to offend anyone with the thought that Occupy Syrah might be mocking the nascent Occupy Wall Street political protests. Wine Harlots say grow a pair. While the state of economy isn’t funny — when the government states half of all Americans are in poverty and one out of four children is transient, the economy is seriously broken – this is clearly a time when a stiff drink is needed. To paraphrase an old military idiom, drink ‘em if you got ‘em.” For you revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries out there, syrah is what to drink to quench the thirst of rebellion. (And if you’re a pacifist, sipping syrah will suit your temperament too.)

What syrah to quaff while you’re drawing up the battle plan? Wine Harlots suggest Andrew Murray Vineyards Terra Bella Vineyard Syrah 2008, a revelation (not a revolution) in a glass. Andrew Murray produces some of the finest syrah in California, the Terra Bella Syrah is a remarkable testament to the skill of the winemaker as well as the exquisiteness that is the syrah grape varietal. The color is deep violet with beautiful legs. The aromas and flavors are berries – blueberry, raspberries and blackberries with a velvety vanilla finish. Syrah’s pair well with a variety of foods, and if you’re getting ready to storm the battlements a quick burger will be just what the general ordered. But if you’re under siege and have a bit more time on your hands, the perfect pairing is Rosemary Lamb with Roasted Potato & White Beans. The music match is “Violet Hill” by Coldplay from the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, a moving revolutionary anthem that sums up the rage and betrayal against the financial chicanery and lack of leadership that is expressed by Occupy Wall Street.

The details: 14.9% alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Appellation: Paso Robles. Varietal: syrah. Suggested retail $36 USD and is available directly from Andrew Murray Vineyards. This was a media sample generously provided by the winery.

C’mon, show us where you stand. Join us in saving syrah. Occupy a glass of syrah to show support today.

Hey Harlot,
Great post and even better insights on the purposes behind the event. I join with you in saying, geez “grow a pair” people. Life is too short to be that uptight. It was just a fun way to show-case this wonderful varietal fantastic elegance and age worthy qualities. It would seem good old Syrah has a bit in common with Mr. Rodney Dangerfield; well known saying, “I don’t get no respect”. I hope the event, made many folks stand up and take notice of this amazing grape and will have them saying, “Got Syrah?”

I’m quite literally drooling over the food pairing for this wine.. Rosemary Lamb with roasted potato and white beans? YUM! I’m being totally honest when I say that this is the first time I’ve ever seen a “music pairing” to go with wine- I Love that!

“Wine Harlots say grow a pair.” – I agree with you and Bill on this one! Drink some wine and get over it people! :P
