“I’m rich. Who the hell wants to be happy?” There was a bitterness in his voice that was new to me.
“How’s your drinking?”
“Perfectly elegant, old top. For some strange reason I seem to be able to handle the stuff. But you never know, do you?”
“Perhaps you were never really a drunk.”
We sat in a corner of the bar at Victor’s and drank gimlets.
“They don’t know how to make them here,” he said. “What they call a gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin and a dash of sugar and bitters. A real gimlet is half gin and half Rose’s Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow.”

Wine Harlots might view the world with a gimlet eye, but we aren’t so jaded as to not appreciate a classic cocktail. And our drink is the hard-core, old-school gimlet. With all due respect, the antagonist in the Philip Marlowe classic doesn’t really know how to make the perfect gimlet either. The Wine Harlots use the classic 3-2-1 ratio for our perfect cocktail. And make sure you use triple sec, not the fancier Cointreau or Grand Marnier. How you serve the drink is totally up to you. We think the drink tastes better on the rocks, but for what you miss in taste you make up for in style if you serve your gimlet straight-up.

Gimlet
3 parts Gin
2 parts Rose’s Lime Juice
1 part Triple Sec

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with fresh ice. Shake until your arms tire. Pour into your glass of choice, and garnish with a lime twist that has been run around the rim of the glass. Enjoy!

Sad to say I’ve never had one. But it sounds like it’s right up my alley, cocktail-wise.

Thank you for introducing me to my potential new drink of choice. I promise to test out all three ‘proper’ variations thoroughly before deciding upon my personal favourite. ;)

The horror!
Never having a gimlet?
We must fix that right away.
Waiter! Two gimlets straight up and straight away!
Let me know what you think.

Cheers!
