“These images in vivid and violent tones have resulted from crystallization of memories of the circus, popular tales or travel.” — Henri Matisse
The Wines of France Kansas City Carnival was held in the historic City Market with the Kansas City skyline as the back drop. Chef Alex Pope of Vagabond created a modern upscale twist on the carnival and state fair standards to pair with the Wines of France. The Wine Harlots favorite was irreverent take of a Wisconsin favorite, cheese curds. Chef Pope reimagined the classic as Tempura Mozzarella Curd Caprese with Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes with Basil Coulis which paired well with a sparking wine, the Lucien Albrecht Crémant D’Alsace, a delicious wine at an approximate retail of $12-14 USD from the Alsace region in France. Also a hit was artisanal version of a corn dog which paired well with Domaine de la Renjarde Côtes du Rhône-Villages Vin de Pay Portesde Mediterranee, about $15 USD from the Rhône. Watermelon slushie with Carmel Wine reduction and served in a poblano pepper? In the 100 degree heat, I’ll take two please! The only dish that struck-out was a play-on-words dish, Popcorn Shrimp. Shrimp and popcorn tossed with truffle butter that missed the mark, clever wordplay notwithstanding. In addition to wine and cusine, there were a few arcade games that tested the player’s mettle, and the performers from the Vibe Tribe kept the guests entertained with flights of fancy and carnival whimsy.

Nannette – what dates were you in KC w/ WOF? Just curious…it’s my ome town!
Hey Kim!
We were in Kansas City July 13-16, the whole Wines of France Across America ran from July 10-25.
A whirlwind trip that was a total blast!
And I loved Kansas City — lots and lots to drink!
Cheers!
