“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.” ― Abraham Lincoln
As a new-media wine authority, I often get asked what beverage would pair best when trying to survive the impending Zombie Apocalypse. With the return of AMC’s The Walking Dead, the question has taken on added urgency. After being eerily quiet on the existence of zombies, the United States as finally acknowledged this imminent threat to our national security, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a graphic novel Preparedness 101: The Zombie Pandemic to plan for the approaching zombie disaster. While it’s imperative to focus on the prime threat of zombies and other supernatural menaces, the CDC director, Dr. Ali Khan, notes, “If you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack.” Sure, fires, storms and floods might happen, so it’s prudent to have your emergency plan and Armageddon Bag all set to roll, but really, it’s all about the zombie danger, so get prepared. The CDC has an Emergency Preparedness and Response list and using the American Red Cross Planning and Preparedness kit will have you ready for any hazard you might face. You don’t have to go all survivalist and Doomsday Preppers to be ready, but having a few basic supplies on hand will give you piece of mind when natural (or supernatural) disasters occur. For general, everyday safety, we recommend the book the Gift of Fear by the preeminent security expert Gavin de Becker.
Back to the matter at hand – What to drink during the Zombie Apocalypse? President Lincoln was spot-on with his recommendation of beer during a national crisis – if you have any concerns about water safety, beer will provide hydration and valuable nutrients. But beer and wine are very heavy to carry if you’re on the run from the zombie nation. If you’re packing for survival, you have to pack light. We suggest the American classic, bourbon. Or any over-proof alcohol that you can re-purpose as a Molotov cocktail if the undead are closing in. Ideally, though, if you and your nearest-and-dearest can make it through the minefield of walkers into your wine cellar, it’s a perfect bunker to hold-off the undead. And what to drink while you’re down there? Seriously? Break out all those precious bottles you’ve been hoarding for a special occasion, drink ‘em if you’ve got ‘em, my friend. Drink ‘em if you’ve got ‘em.
